About the Business
Black & Tan Hall is a values-driven cultural and dining hall co-founded by cultural organizer Karen Toering, musician Ben Hunter, and educator Rodney Herold. Drawing historic inspiration from Seattle’s legendary Black & Tan Club of the 1920s jazz era, the venue operates on a cooperative model to combat economic displacement through arts and dining.
Situated on Rainier Avenue in Columbia City, Black & Tan Hall provides a proud civic hearth aligned with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s international directive, “Building Our Economic Wealth.” The hall regularly hosts community dialogues, scholarship benefits, and Divine Nine delegations with an exclusive Sisterhood Advantage event perk.
Hosting live jazz performances, cultural dinners, documentary screenings, and private community celebrations, Black & Tan Hall is an iconic arts anchor during Seattle’s June Black Dollar Days. Community members can reserve tickets for upcoming performances or book private hall events online.
